Overall results

Played 17, won 8, drew 2, lost 7

Points for 414, against 410

Chiefs finished 5th out of 15 teams, and lost a quarter-final

The format was the same as in recent seasons, with three conferences operating. Each team played all others in its own conference home and away, while they met four opponents from the other two conferences, two home and two away. The conference winners qualified in the first three places regardless of whether other sides had superior records or not, and then the next three filled out the quarter-finals, which were only played between 3rd and 6th, and 4th and 5th. The top two sides had a free weekend.

The Chiefs had a bizarre tour of South Africa, with both games ending in high-scoring draws. In each case the Chiefs had to come from a long way back and scored the necessary points right on full-time; in both matches the Chiefs scored two more tries than their opponents. The Bulls game ended in what was tied for the second-highest Super Rugby draw, while the Cheetahs game a week later was the highest in competition history. They were the fourth and fifth draws the Chiefs had played where the teams shared 50 points or more.

Since the Chiefs lost to the Force on their way to South Africa, they returned home with no wins for the tour – but seven log points.

When the Chiefs were held to 8 by the Hurricanes it represented the first time the side had not posted a double-figure total since 20 Feb 2009, when the Waratahs limited the Chiefs to a single converted try. In the interim the side had played 89 matches with a double-figure score each time.
