Overall results

Played 18, won 14, lost 4

Points for 505, against 405

Chiefs finished 1st out of 15 teams, had a quarter-final bye, hosted and won both a semi-final and final to claim the title for the second time.

The format was the same as in recent seasons, with three conferences operating. Each team played all others in its own conference home and away, while they met four opponents from the other two conferences, two home and two away. The conference winners qualified in the first three places regardless of whether other sides had superior records or not, and then the next three filled out the quarter-finals, which were only played between 3rd and 6th, and 4th and 5th. The top two sides had a free weekend.

When the Chiefs beat the Cheetahs in round 2 it represented the first time they had held a winning record since the match against Natal midway through 1997. The subsequent 1997 match was lost to Northern Transvaal, levelling the all-time record at 9-9, and it took more than 15 years to get ahead again.

The opening game, against the Highlanders, marked the first time the Chiefs had not held a losing record since going down to the Waratahs in the last game of 1998. After losing to the Stormers, a win against the Kings put the Chiefs back in credit and they steadily drew ahead for the rest of the season.

The Chiefs set a new winning margin record when they beat the Cheetahs 45-3 in round 2; the old mark (38 points, 47-9) against Gauteng had stood since 1997.

Gareth Anscombe made a record start to his Chiefs career by reaching 100 points in his seventh match (Aaron Cruden had taken eight the year before). Anscombe created a unique record by scoring 20 points in each of his first two matches for the team. Later in the season he had a third 20-point game, matching Glen Jackson’s feat from 2001.

The team set new records for tries, penalty goals and total points in a single season. The old marks were 53 tries, 50 penalty goals and 501 points, all set the previous season.
