Overall results

Played 18, won 14, lost 4

Points for 501, against 381

Chiefs finished 2nd out of 15 teams, had a quarter-final bye, hosted and won both a semi-final and final to claim the title for the first time.

The format was the same as 2011, with three conferences operating. Each team played all others in its own conference home and away, while they met four opponents from the other two conferences, two home and two away. The conference winners qualified in the first three places regardless of whether other sides had superior records or not, and then the next three filled out the quarter-finals, which were only played between 3rd and 6th, and 4th and 5th. The top two sides had a free weekend.

The Chiefs became the host team for the final when the Sharks beat the Stormers in the semi-final.

The Chiefs set a new team record for points in a season with 501, surpassing the previous best of 373 (set in 2007) with their first score in the 14th match, the return with the Highlanders.

Despite playing 18 matches the points conceded was not a record, with the 418 in 2010 never being threatened.

Few Chiefs matches were won decisively, with losers taking consolation points in nine (six of which the Chiefs won) and the semi-final was decided by three.

The nine consecutive wins (Blues to Lions) set a new team record, beating the old mark of six which was set in 2009.

Aaron Cruden performed the unusual feat – it’s a lot rarer than one might expect – of scoring at least one conversion and one penalty goal in every match.

Cruden was the only player to take a kick at goal this season, and he had a 77.50 percent success rate (93 out of 120).

Asaeli Tikoirotuma equalled both the Chiefs and all Super Rugby records with his four tries against the Blues

The team set new records for tries, conversions, penalty goals and total points in a single season. The old marks were 47 tries (2009), 40 conversions (2009), 41 penalty goals (2011) and 373 points (2007).

Aaron Cruden, in his first year with the Chiefs, rewrote the record book with new season bests for points (by 87), conversions and penalty goals; for both conversions and penalty goals he beat team records for a single season no matter how many kickers had been used.

Cruden narrowly missed breaking the existing Super Rugby record, held by Morne Steyn with 263 in 2010. His total was second-best by any player.

Cruden a new individual record for any player with 43 conversions in a season, and his 50 penalty goals was second only to Steyn in 2010 (51).

There is no conclusive evidence Marcel Cummings-Toone took the field against the Brumbies at Mt Maunganui in week four, although he was awarded a Chiefs number. The situation was unusual: the Chiefs scored after the final siren to break up a 22-22 draw; there is no argument starter Mahonri Schwalger was on the field when the play began. Apparently Cummings-Toone went onto the field as the conversion was being taken although the game was not going to restart; it was not noted on the official match report and if nobody left the field (Schwalger most likely stayed around to shake hands) no replacement occurred. Currently the Chiefs register, built from official reports, shows Cummings-Toone with a number but no appearances, as Schwalger and Hikawera Elliot shared the hooking duties in all but the semi-final, when Schwalger went the full 80 minutes.

The Chiefs had a settled look this season, with 21 of the 33 players making ten or more appearances.

Sam Cane, in his first season, set a new Chiefs record with 12 appearances off the bench.

At the end of the season the following were Chiefs records:

Highest score: 72 v Lions at Johannesburg 2010

Biggest winning margin: 38 points (47-9) v Gauteng at Hamilton 1997

Most tries in a match: 4 by Sitiveni Sivivatu v Blues at Hamilton 2009

4 by Asaeli Tikoirotuma v Blues at Albany 2012

Most conversions in a match: 9 by Stephen Donald v Lions at Johannesburg 2010

Most penalty goals in a match: 6 by Glen Jackson v Reds at Rotorua 2001

6 by Stephen Donald v Crusaders at Christchurch 2007

Most points in a match: 32 by Stephen Donald v Lions at Johannesburg 2010

Most appearances: 96 by Liam Messam 2006-12
