Chiefs finished 10th out of 15 teams and did not make the playoffs
A new format was used as the competition expanded to 15 teams, with three conferences operating. Each team played all others in its own conference home and away, while they met four opponents from the other two conferences, two home and two away. The conference winners qualified in the first three places regardless of whether other sides had superior records or not, and then the next three filled out the quarter-finals, which were only played between 3rd and 6th, and 4th and 5th. The top two sides had a free weekend.
The Chiefs, like most teams, found points hard to come by in 2011 as the usual raft of law changes all tended to favour the defensive sides. In the end the Chiefs were held below 20 on nine occasions – easily a franchise record – while they held seven opponents below that figure. In the 16 matches the only team to reach 40 points was the Bulls, at Pretoria in round 11.
In a season played under the laws of the day good goal-kicking was essential but, after years of being among the leaders, the Chiefs slipped to 13th out of 15 in this department.
Unusually for a tenth-placed team which didn’t have one or two large wins on the record, the Chiefs’ points differential was only -16.

In a low-scoring season the only notable feature was the Sharks match, in which the Chiefs were held tryless for the first time since 2005, but still won thanks to five penalty goals. It was the eighth time the Chiefs had been held tryless, but the first of those matches which the team won.
This was also the first tryless game involving the Chiefs, as the Sharks only kicked three penalty goals.
Remarkably for a tenth-placed team, the Chiefs scored more tries (33) than they gave up (30).
The Chiefs scored only 33 tries, the lowest season total since 2005 – which was also the last of the 11-game seasons.
A new record of 41 penalty goals was set in 2011, but the 46 conceded were, by nearly 25 percent, also a new record.
