Overall results

Played 15, won 10, lost 5

Points for 369, against 307

Chiefs finished 2nd out of 14 teams, hosted and won a semi-final before losing the final

This season was the best for the Chiefs so far; they won nine round-robin matches, the best total yet; they finished second on the log, hosted a semi-final which they won before losing the final.

Unusually for a team which finished so high, the Chiefs scored less than 20 points in seven matches. What made the season was that three of these (all in the run to the final) were won and consolation points were taken from three of the others. The seventh was the final, with no ladder points at stake.

The Chiefs took competition points from every game in 2009, as all four pool losses were by seven points or fewer.

Stephen Donald posted 100 points in a season for the fourth consecutive year.

The Chiefs set new season records for tries (the old mark was 44 in 2008) and conversions (beating the 31 of the previous season).

Owing to a relatively low number of penalty goals (the second lowest in team history) the 2007 scoring total (373) was not passed.

The Chiefs team kicking success rate (58 from 77, 75.32%) was bettered only by the Brumbies and Hurricanes in 2009.
