Chiefs finished 4th out of 12 teams and made the semi-finals for the first time, where they were beaten by the Brumbies
The Chiefs posted their best regular season record (seven wins and four losses), but scored 12 fewer points and seven fewer tries than in 2003.
Despite finishing fourth, the Chiefs scored 28 tries and conceded 30 in round robin play.
In 12 matches involving the Chiefs there was only one score above 36 – 39 by the Reds in the second match.

Depending on which school of thought you might be in, Lome Fa’atau scored either five or six tries this season. This was because there was no specific ruling on penalty tries at the time – unlike now, when they are just awarded to a team – and the traditional New Zealand method of reckoning gave the try to a particular player if he was the probable try-scorer but for foul play. In those days it was normally pretty obvious who the likely scorer was.
