Overall results
Played 11, won 2, lost 9
Points for 288, against 319
Chiefs finished 10th out of 12 teams and did not make the semi-finals
Despite the poor record, the Chiefs only conceded a relatively small differential (-31). During the season they collected ten bonus points (five for tries, five for narrow losses), the most of any of the 12 teams.
Despite finishing tenth out of 12 teams the Chiefs had a better differential than five others, including the sixth-placed Bulls, and were actually only seven points behind the fifth-placed Waratahs, who were one try in their last match (against the Chiefs) away from making the playoffs.

Jono Gibbes kicked a dropped goal against the Cats at Rotorua – the first by a forward in New Zealand first-class rugby since 2001, when Filo Tiatia kicked one for Wellington against Waikato at Seddon Park (Rugby Park was in the middle of its transformation to the current stadium).

Because the Chiefs loose trio had a very settled look to it – Paul Miller or Bates started every game at No 8 and Holah and Gibbes started every game at flanker – Scott Couch made all nine of his appearances off the bench – a new Chiefs record for replacement appearances, and also by a player who did not start any games.
Aleki Lutui made all seven appearances off the bench – nothing unusual for the Chiefs reserve hooker since Guy Coleman made eight (2002) and seven (2001) sub appearances in the previous two seasons.
At the end of the season the following were Chiefs records:
Highest score: 53 v Bulls at Hamilton 2002
Biggest winning margin: 38 points (47-9) v Gauteng at Hamilton 1997
Most tries in a match: 3 by Ian Jones v Waratahs at Hamilton 1996
3 by Eric Rush v Brumbies at Canberra 1997
3 by Keith Lowen v Blues at Rotorua 2001
3 by Danny Lee v Highlanders at Rotorua 2001
3 by Bruce Reihana v Hurricanes at Wellington 2001
3 by Nick Collins v Hurricanes at Hamilton 2002
Most conversions in a match: 6 by Glen Jackson v Highlanders at Rotorua 2001
6 by David Hill v Bulls at Hamilton 2002
Most penalty goals in a match: 6 by Glen Jackson v Reds at Rotorua 2001
Most points in a match: 24 by Glen Jackson v Bulls at Pretoria 2001
Most appearances: 64 by Michael Collins 1997-2003
