Nick Collins, who was making a rare start, became the fourth different player to score a hat-trick for the Chiefs in two seasons.

Roger Randle scored in six consecutive matches in 2002; only twice previously had a Chiefs player even scored six tries in a season.

David Hill equalled Glen Jackson’s record of six conversions in a match, set the previous season.

Roger Randle set a new Chiefs record with 12 tries in the season; this mark was not equalled until 2023 and was still the team record in 2025.

The Chiefs scored 39 tries in 2002, which was comfortably a record; the previous best was 32 in 1996.

With more tries being scored it was no surprise to find a new record for conversions in a season was also set, beating the old mark of 25 set in 1996 and matched in 2001.

As well as those who played, Karl Te Nana and Wayne McEntee were named in the squad but never took the field. There is some dispute over McEntee, who was given a Chiefs number in 2020 although there is no record of him playing other than pre-season games.

In the match against the Reds at Brisbane, Bruce Reihana became the first player to make 50 Chiefs appearances.

All of Guy Coleman’s eight appearances this season were off the bench; he set new Chiefs marks for most appearances as a replacement in a season (having equalled the old mark of seven in 2001), and for most matches in a season without a start.

At the end of the season the following were Chiefs records:

Highest score: 53 v Bulls at Hamilton 2002

Biggest winning margin: 38 points (47-9) v Gauteng at Hamilton 1997

Most tries in a match: 3 by Ian Jones v Waratahs at Hamilton 1996

3 by Eric Rush v Brumbies at Canberra 1997

3 by Keith Lowen v Blues at Rotorua 2001

3 by Danny Lee v Highlanders at Rotorua 2001

3 by Bruce Reihana v Hurricanes at Wellington 2001

3 by Nick Collins v Hurricanes at Hamilton 2002

Most conversions in a match: 6 by Glen Jackson v Highlanders at Rotorua 2001

6 by David Hill v Bulls at Hamilton 2002

Most penalty goals in a match: 6 by Glen Jackson v Reds at Rotorua 2001

Most points in a match: 24 by Glen Jackson v Bulls at Pretoria 2001

Most appearances: 58 by Bruce Reihana 1997-2002
